A new link

I’ll be adding the link later today, but I was on the phone with my sister and she put me in mind of it. Kathy Shaidle had this not very nice but very funny post:

People are stupid.
That’s been my motto since the first day of kindergarten. I need a coat of arms made up, with “People Are Stupid” in Latin and whatever the heraldry is for “retard rampant”… A drooling gryphon or something…

Rightwing Film Geek writes:
Here is a conversation between two people, as related to me by a co-worker.

Woman 1 and Woman 2 are both in their late 20s, in the bathroom after watching FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS at a Georgetown theater.

So, like, that movie was so depressing
That was, like, during World War 2, right?
Yeah, I think so. It was like 1937, wasn’t it?
Something like that. But I’ve never understood why we were in Japan
I think it had something to do, like, with the Japanese invading Hawaii or something
I so have to go home and look this stuff up on the Internet.
Women can be especially dumb. See below:

Anyway, that put me in mind of something Joe showed me from one of his favorite blogs, Overheard at Western. I’ve pasted the text below:

From each, according to her ability…
Every year, around exam time, when the kiddies who haven’t seen a library all year come out to cram, a submission comes along that blows our minds a little bit. This is that submission.

Three girls are studying (loudly) for some sort of exam.

Girl #3: …Because they were pushed by the Nazis.
Girl #2: Is it Nazis? Yeah, it was Nazis in World War II.
Girl #1: Are you sure?
Girl #2: I’m almost positive… (flips through pages and pages of notes)… I’m pretty sure… (flips one last page) Okay, yeah. Here it is. DEFINITELY the Nazis.
Guy: (from across the room, under his breath) Dear God…
Girl #2: (a few minutes later) Okay, so in World War II Russia was a communist country. I guess that only takes one sentence to sum it all up.

As I mentioned, I’ll be adding Overheard at Western to my links. I’m afraid it’s not much in the way of positive, constructive anything…but it is often good for a laugh or a dumbfounded head-shake.

Tell me more about this “offering up”…

I understand the theory. But I don’t think I fully understand the mechanics of it.

Let’s say I’m working our front desk, and I’m waiting for my co-worker to relieve me for lunch. I’m hungry, I’m thirsty, and I want to get off the desk before the phone rings AGAIN. (Just theoretically, of course!) She’s taking her sweet time, and I’m getting more and more frustrated and uncomfortable. So I think, “Offer it up, Clam, offer it up.” Have I offered it up if I’m still irritated? What if the irritation goes away as soon as I start offering it up? Did it count?

Any insight?

Second interview tonight!

Yesterday afternoon I got an e-mail asking me to come in for a second interview for the church job. My options were: tonight, Saturday morning, or next Monday evening. Since I promised to attend a work function Saturday morning, and since I prefer not to miss class, tonight was the best possible option.

I feel weird even praying about it because, of course, Pope Benedict has gone on the long-anticipated and much-dreaded trip to Turkey, and it feels shallow and selfish to even be thinking of something I want. I wonder what the theology of something like this would be? I mean, God is omniscient and omnipotent. So He can handle anything and everything at once, right? It’s not a question of a zero-sum game in that respect. It’s just the willingness on my part to not ask for something I want? Does anyone understand what I’m getting at here? Can someone ’splain me this?

By the way, I finished another Agatha Christie last night – Lord Edgware Dies. Once again, she fooled me. Guess I’m not as S-M-R-T as some people I know… ;-)

You paid attention during 100% of high school!

85-100% You must be an autodidact, because American high schools don’t get scores that high! Good show, old chap!

Do you deserve your high school diploma?

I was fashionably apathetic in high school, much to the dismay of my family and those who knew me prior to, say, age 12 or 13. I went from having next to no social skills and a lot of drive to learn, to hiding my drive to learn for the sake of having some friends. Not a good choice, I’ll grant you, but that’s what I did. Go take the test and see how you did!

My sister’s response to Katharine Jefferts Schori

Over on our team blog, A Tale of Two Sisters, my sister has posted an e-mail she sent to Katharine Jefferts Schori. Apparently Schori struck a nerve. Take a look!

That Bachynski/Selepak/Katsavrias post

If anyone’s wondering, I deleted it because I didn’t follow my usual rule of saving a draft that I’m unsure of for some time and then going back to it later. Re-reading it, I saw that I’d fallen into some of my least-favorite habits (most notably sounding appallingly sanctimonious). Moreover, it took me way out of my depth in terms of theology. So I decided to save the text to Word, delete the post, and possibly revisit the topic (more carefully) later.

My deleting it had the unfortunate secondary effect of deleting someone’s comment on it, so my apologies for that. Mea culpa.

Tagged for a meme! Yay – my very first one! :-)

Stephanie at La Vie Catholique tagged me for the Wikipedia birthday meme. Here goes:

Three Events:
1559 - Elizabeth I crowned queen of England. Good news for her; bad news for Catholics. St. Margaret Clitherow, for one, was martyred during Good Queen Bess’ reign.

1854 - The accordion is patented by Anthony Faas. Children who, like my father, were forced to learn the accordion from age six, curse Anthony Faas for generations to come.

1942 - Henry Ford patents a plastic automobile, which is 30% lighter than a regular car. Fifty years later, Geo says “What a great idea!” and launches a line of plastic cars that are powered by hamster wheels and rubber bands. Just kidding!

Two Birthdays:
1808 - Salmon P. Chase, 6th Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. (d. 1873)

1942 - Richard Moll, American actor.

One Death:
1691 – George Fox, English founder of the Quakers.

One Holiday/Observance:
New Year’s Eve in the Julian calendar.

Rules:1) Go to Wikipedia
2) In the search box, type your birth month and day but not the year.
3) List three events that happened on your birthday
4) List two important birthdays and one death
5) One holiday or observance (if any)

I would add that Orlando Bloom and I share the same birthday, right down to the year. I did not know that before today. :-)

I tag…hmm…The Big Seester and Dr. Mabuse.

Hurrah!

The interview went well! I’m very excited – it looks like a perfect fit for a part-time job for me. The position will actually be primarily supporting the parish’s development director (they have a capital campaign going on right now), and I spent a couple of years supporting a development officer. I now work in Alumni Affairs, but I help with the Faculty/Staff campaign as well.

It really seems providential. I’ll keep praying for the Lord’s will to be done, whatever that is; I know I’d like the job, but it depends on what He wants. Right? Right.

Many thanks to all who have been praying for me!

Jobs, jobs, jobs…

Tonight I have an interview at a local church. I’m trying to get a part-time, evening and weekend job to supplement my income. I’m so nervous!

I’m definitely qualified for the job – they’re looking for someone to do evening and weekend clerical/receptionist type work. However, they got a slew of applications. And I always work myself up about these things. Sigh…

I also faxed off my application to Right to Life of Michigan today; they’re looking for an office manager for their Detroit office. I’m not particularly optimistic about that one; even if I am offered it, it may pay less than I currently make. While I want to sacrifice for the Lord, I also want to pay my mortgage. So I’m trying to reserve judgment on that and simply submit myself to the will of the Lord (which is good practice anyway). Even if I’m offered the job, and even if I can afford to take it, it will be a nightmare to explain to my militantly ‘pro-choice’ parents that I’m leaving a perfectly good (union) job at a perfectly respectable (public) university to take a job at (gasp) Right to Life. I haven’t even told them that I’m in RCIA yet. However, His will, not mine, be done. If that’s what He wants, that’s what I’ll do.

I also saw an administrative assistant job open at my university, for which I plan to apply. It’d be a nice raise, and a nice move, and…just utterly and uneventfully NICE. So again – His will be done. I’m not sure what to hope or pray for, so I’ll just pray for God’s will and the courage to carry it out. I would certainly appreciate anyone else’s prayers as well. :-)
