Reiterate Call to End Iraq War
U.S. Bishops Seek Meeting with House Lawmakers
The U.S. bishops will meet with 14 Catholic Democrats from the House of Representatives to discuss a “reasonable transition” to end the war in Iraq. A similar meeting has been requested with Republican members of the House. In addition, the bishops reiterate their call to break the political stalemate in Washington and pursue a bipartisan policy to end the war as soon as possible.
“The current situation in Iraq is unacceptable and unsustainable, as is the policy and political stalemate among decision makers in Washington,” says Bishop Thomas Wenski of Orlando, chairman of bishops’ committee on International Policy. He made the comments in a letter responding to a request for a meeting on Iraq from Rep. Tim Ryan (D/Ohio) and 13 other House Democrats. The comments were also contained in a letter the bishop sent to Rep. John Boehner (R/Ohio), House minority leader, requesting a meeting with Republicans.
Clam here: Anyone think there’s a chance the bishops might wrap up the meeting with a reminder not to present oneself for Communion if one is actively legislating against Church teaching on life issues?
…no, I don’t think so either. Sigh.
It seems like it’s more in their field to be telling them whether they’re fit for Communion rather than tell them how to end the war in Iraq.
Something is a little backwards…
Why did the catechism in number #2309 give the prudential judgement for just wars to the political arm when both Rome and the Bishops then proceed to lecture the the political arm that they are wrong almost immediately?
Then we have them (USCCB) lecturing the government on the death penalty when 5 catholic countries in some stat sources are in the top ten for murder rates….Columbia, Mexico etc and none have the death penalty…..ergo….modern penology is not protecting society in Catholic countries as the catechism says it is.
I’d like to see the Bishops….descend to the mundane…. get Catholic school girls’ uniforms to switch from skirts which they hike up in many cases….to slacks which they can’t hike up. But alas….such will never happen because our Bishops are war experts only …..and thus we’ll continue to supply the buses of the major cites in the AM with a floor show/ our uniforms will continue to be mentioned in rap songs leeringly and continue to be used in the likes of Brittany Spears’ videos.
And all the while, the prudential judgement for just war’s conditions was handed over to the secular arm at the end of CCC 2309……yeah….ok.
