Da Pope!!!
Kasia February 12th, 2008
I am such a Catho-geek.
I already knew that the Pope was coming to the East Coast, and had resigned myself to accepting that I would not get to see him while he’s in the States. I mean, DC and New York aren’t exactly on the other side of the world (unlike, say, the Vatican), but still.
Well, THEN I heard about tickets being available from our Archdiocese to an actual Pontifical Mass that’s being held at Yankee Stadium. So I jumped on the horn - well, on the e-mail - to The Canuck and asked if that was something he’d be interested in going to, assuming we could get tickets. I was debating: on the one hand, it’s Mass at a stadium, which seems a little incongruous… But on the other hand, it’s seeing the Pope celebrate Mass!!!!!!!!!!!!! (You can tell by contrasting the punctuation which consideration won out for me.)
He said sure, and I started calling other people to see if they wanted tickets. I couldn’t call everyone I would’ve liked to, but I got TBS, Jill and her family, and Jaibee (some of the biggest local Catho-geeks I know).
Noo Yawk, here we come!!!
SO EXCITED!!
Please say a prayer for the “S” family that God will see to the “details.”
I want some too……I am a catho geek all the way! I want to see the representative of God on earth. How awesome is that?
Oh, good for you, Kasia! I saw JPII at the Silverdome and it was one of the most memorable events of my youth. Does this mean you have the tickets or that you’re in the drawing for them? (In my diocese it was a drawing from each parish.)
What’s the difference between a Catho-geek and a Catholidork?
Oooh! We could plan car activities like praying the rosary and Divine Mercy chaplet…. Seeing how many Christian bumper stickers there are on other cars…. Quizzing each other on our catechism…. (Re)Listening to Podcasts and then engaging the entire car in thoughtful discussion….
Just so you know…
I will be in the car in which I can take a nap, look out quietly at scenery, and then nap some more!
That is…if God works out the details and we actually get to go on this trip.
So maybe I’m not a Catholidork or a Catho-geek, maybe this means I’m a Catho-sloth which doesn’t sound good.
Mmm…you know I love you dearly, Jaibee, but Jill’s plan sounds more appealing. I tend to like a relatively low-key ride, especially when it’s 10 hours each way…
Jaibee has visions of being tied up and muzzled in a trunk….
Oh my gosh Jaibee! I am laughing so hard -I have this visual…which is extremely funny.
C’mon, you know we love you and would never do such a thing.
However, I’m a mom, and one should consider that the phrase, “don’t make me turn this car around…” is in my arsenal
Of course we wouldn’t.
…but as I think about it, in my “trunk”, you’d have plenty of air circulation…
Oh, for you both, Pat was saying that we might want to look into air fare, as sometimes they run specials where we can fly into Newark or LaGuardia for $50 round trip. Something to consider, since gas prices are going to be about $400 per car.
Um, I’m reckoning more like $200 - $250 for my car; it’s 600 miles from Detroit to Newark, and I get about 300 miles per tank. With gas prices what they are now, I pay about $35 or $40 to fill up. Figure five tanks of gas (two each way and one in Joizee itself), and that’s $200. Jill’s would probably be higher, because she drives an Explorer. Dude, what kind of mileage does that Focus get?!?
Sorry, the $400 estimate overwhelmed me, and I forgot to say this:
“But it’s definitely something to keep our eyes on - good idea!”
Jill is not thinking about this right now - can you say overwhelmed?! I’m taking a nap the whole way anyhow remember? (don’t pay attention to the ostrich feathers hanging out of my pockets either, they aren’t important…)
Oh, and don’t forget the tolls coming and going.
With Love,
Devil’s Advocate
